Marine Cleanup Initiative (MCI)
Marine Cleanup Initiative (MCI) is a Florida-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting, restoring, and preserving our waterways through hands-on environmental stewardship, scientific collaboration, and community engagement.
For more than 17 years, MCI has worked throughout the Treasure Coast with local governments, state and federal agencies, environmental organizations, universities, businesses, and volunteers to improve the health of the Indian River Lagoon and surrounding waterways.
Our work includes:
- Waterway and shoreline cleanups
- Marine debris and derelict vessel removal
- Oyster reef and seagrass habitat restoration
- Water quality improvement projects
- Artificial reef support and marine habitat enhancement
- Stormwater pollution prevention initiatives
- Environmental education and youth outreach

- Public awareness and community engagement
One of MCI’s signature projects is the restoration of Moore’s Creek in Fort Pierce, where the organization has partnered with agencies and volunteers to remove debris, improve water flow, support scientific research, and help reduce pollution entering the Indian River Lagoon. MCI also works alongside universities and environmental partners on innovative projects such as Operation TRAP, which captures trash before it reaches sensitive estuarine habitats.
Beyond environmental restoration, Marine Cleanup Initiative believes conservation begins with education. The organization provides educational programs for schools, community groups, and civic organizations while encouraging volunteerism and responsible environmental stewardship.
